Another way to look at it is that without the ups and downs, it's a flatline, but we all just want the ups and so we get better and better at avoiding the downs, until the process gets out of control and only those at the top are really benefiting and it gets more and more corrupt and focused on the process, like accumulating money, rather than real benefits. Then we have an enormous down to deal with. Which is where we are now.
