It is the same sort of religious mumbo jumbo that has gone on since the dawn of history, where the more arcane and nonsensical the core beliefs, the more it separates the True Believers from the merely social and curious, that is the basis of every cult. The overall effect is a feedback loop, an echo chamber, that creates a vortex, just like a hurricane, or tornado, even a black hole.

Yet the overall effect in human society is that it simply becomes disconnected and at the point it can no longer effectively predate on that larger society, is toast.
