As mobile organisms, this sentient interface our body has with its situation functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so not only do we think of time as the present moving past to future, when the evident reality is that activity and the resulting change turns future to past, but we tend to frame everything as sequence, when the reality is much more a networking effect, of everything interacting in all directions.
Which gets far more complex much more quickly, that just trying to unravel a sequence of cause and effect.
One of the biggest obstacles is our necessary and natural habit of building on prior knowledge, where often it becomes a patching of earlier misconceptions, than questioning them. An epicycle effect.
Consider that epicycles were brilliant math, as a modeling of our view of the cosmos, but the conclusions drawn, crystalline spheres, were lousy physics, yet the same habit prevails, of trying to explain the larger reality in terms of the theories and then just patching the old models, than questioning them. They are now finding those much older galaxies and can't figure out how to fit them in the model;
