As you imply, this is a fairly situational argument. If you want to go any deeper, you need to consider the relationship between liberal and conservative and how they drive and define each other, over literally the entire course of cultural evolution.
Any society that ever existed will have those upholding the status quo and those pushing against it.
The problem is the feedback loop, similar to the process of aging. Whether youth rebel against, or go along with their elders, both are defined in terms set down by those prior generations.
So if you really want to get outside this pattern, you first need to recognize it as an inherent dynamic, then try to peel away many of those social and cultural feedback loops.
For instance, the primary cultural construct of Western civilization is monotheism.
Logically though, a spiritual absolute would be the essence of sentience, from which we rise, not an ideal of wisdom and judgement, from which we fell.
To the Ancients, there was little distinction between culture and civics, so monotheism equated with a monoculture. One people, one rule, one god.
Remember democracy and republicanism originated in pantheistic cultures, as they analogized multiculturalism. The many harmonizing as a network, not synchronizing as the one.
The Romans adopted Christianity as the Empire solidified and remnants of the Republic were being erased. Though vestiges of pantheism remained, as the Trinity. Which originated from the Greek year god cycle. The son reborn in the spring, of the sky father and earth mother.
Given the process of regeneration and the binary of the sexes was incompatible with a spiritual monolith, the origins of this had to be buried.
Consequently the default political model for Europe, for the next 1500 years was monarchy, subservience to the Big Guy on top.
When the West went back to less centralized systems, it required the separation of church and state, culture and civics.
As for capitalism, we are linear, goal oriented organisms in a cyclical, circular, feedback generated reality, so while markets need money to circulate, people see it as the signal to extract and store.
The medium became the message, the tool became the god.
Which is a whole other topic. Suffice to say, blood is a medium, fat is a store. They shouldn't be mixed.
So if you really want to reset the process, don't assume liberalism to be any more than the loyal opposition. Raw social energies to be co-opted or consumed, by the current cultural status quo. Which in this case, means being monetized.
