Ben,
You are being reality based and it's got your head spinning in circles.
While our cultures like to characterize good and bad as some cosmic duel, between the forces of righteousness and evil, to nature, it's the basic biological binary of beneficial and detrimental, the 1/0 of sentience.
So while culture is the stories we tell children to get them to behave, nature is this ginormous super computer that keeps spitting out answers we don't like.
The problem here is it is trying to process incompatible programs and it's frozen.
Can they be patched together, say a two state solution, or do we reset, say Armageddon. Then the few billions left can sort out what's left.
Personally I think we should go back and debug the program.
Ideals are not absolutes, for one thing. Monotheism, as it is currently espoused, is illogical.
Money is a social contract, enabling society, not a commodity to mine from it, for another. A medium is not a store.
I could go on, but it looks like war is the more likely solution. The chest thumpers, finger pointers and rock throwers get all the attention. The monkey brain has taken over.
