Consciousness get obscured by how it manifests. It's more the light shining through the film, than the images on it.
As these mobile creatures, our experience is sequential perceptions and analysis of them, in order to navigate. Then, as humanity, we evolved civilization out of narrative based cultures. So we think of time as the point of the present, moving past to future. Physics codifies it as measures of duration.
The reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns. Duration is the present, as the events come and go.
There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Energy is conserved, because it is the present. Time is an effect and measure of it, as well as temperature, pressure, color, sound. Frequencies and amplitudes. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
So the energy, as process, goes past to future, while the patterns generated go future to past.
The energy drives the wave, while the fluctuations rise and fall.
Lives go birth to death, while life moves onto the next generation, shedding the old.
Given consciousness also goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts go future to past, it might suggest consciousness manifests as an energy.
Yet it is the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy driving us on, while the central nervous system sorts and orders the patterns precipitating out.

Science has the same problem with energy, as it does with consciousness, in that it can only be perceived in terms of the forms it manifests. We see and measure the fluctuations, frequencies and amplitudes, rather than the actual energy.
Quantum theory, for example, tries to explain physical reality in terms of the information, rather than what drives and manifests it.
It's information all the way down, but it's energy all the way up. Galaxies are energy radiating out, as form coalesces in.
A spiritual absolute would be that essence from which we rise, not an ideal from which we fell.
Which expands relative to the infinite. Nodes and networks.
