Consciousness is really that interface between your body and its context. You are unaware of much of your body. It is the senses that feed your awareness and these are of things outside your body, from the things you see, feel, hear and smell, to the the connections you have with other people, or even tools and books. As such, you are feedback with the rest of the world. It's like you are one neuron in a larger neurologic network.
