Rome adopted a monotheistic sect as its state religion, as the Empire was rising from the ashes of the Republic.

In order to go back to such populist forms, it required separation of church and state, culture and civics.

The centripetal and centrifugal elements battling it out before Oct 7th have not evaporated, just because the tribe feels compelled to follow the crazies down the rabbit hole.
