Flies have much faster reaction times, because there isn't all that neurological hardware and software between sense and motor functions.
Our biggest conceptual problem is that as mobile organisms, this sentient interface our body has with its situation functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so our sense of time is the present going past to future. As the basis of culture and civilization, as narrative and history, it is foundational to those mountains of knowledge stored away.
The reality is that activity and the resulting change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns.
Like trying to understand the cosmos swirling east to west, before understanding the earth is turning west to east.
There is no dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
A tapestry being woven of strands constantly being pulled from what was woven.
Energy is conserved, because it manifests this presence, crating time, temperature, pressure, color and sound, as frequencies and amplitudes rates and degrees.
So the energy, as present, goes past to future, because the patterns generated come and go, potential to residual. Energy drives the wave, the fluctuations rise and fall. No tiny strings necessary.
Consciousness also goes past to future, because the perceptions, emotions and thoughts giving it form and structure go future to past.
Suggesting consciousness manifests as energy.
The digestive system processes the energy, feeding the flame, while the nervous system sorts the patterns, signals from the noise(ambient energy).
Galaxies are energy radiating out, as structure coalesces in, so it's basic.
Consider the various layers of interaction going on. For one thing, we have to process what is a field of activity into sequence. The perceptions of this energy field tend to have to be framed by those cultural frames, languages, biases, beliefs, etc.
The emotional, right brain is more the amplitudes and the degrees. The energies of the waves building and receding. The resulting effects of temperature and pressure.
The left, logical side is the more distinct forms that solidify out of this energy and the relationships they entail. More the clocks and rulers measuring the more stable patterns and entities, objects.
Here I can take the conversation in several directions, either build on how some of the problems manifest in society, but I've written various articles covering those. The more recent;

What is harder to express is becoming more deeply immersed into this field of conscious energies.
As a child, I remember laying on the porch, watching this ant, when it stopped, like it sensed me. Then there was this tiny cone of awareness that I could see, waving around with its antennae.
Which leads into what are called auras. That bubble of awareness that we consciously manifest. Which if we are sensitive to being around other people, become apparent.
There is another term I came across some years ago; Floaters. Which are supposedly optical effects of vision problems, yet accurately express what I tend to see, those dark spots, when other people are off in the middle distance and focused in my direction. This is most manifested when driving, as those coming the other direction are focused on the space between us.
The next step is to make your own projection that much more diffuse, then you start to sense the broader aspects of their perceptions, from random snippets of thought and language to other aspects of the landscape they would seem to be focused on, thus giving some sense of connectivity with.
It's like our minds are radios and they don't make any sense, if we don't take the radio waves into consideration.
We all seem to have these little devices that can transmit large amounts of information wirelessly, so it would seem that given our few billions years of biological evolution, we would have similar abilities, but which get buried in our cultural tendencies toward reductionism, where anyone not focused on the most hardcore aspects of society, such as money and power, are dismissed as weak.
Though as I like to point out, the bull is power. The matador is art.
Currently the modern world and its power structures are fast resembling a scab, that is becoming ever more dried out, rigid and disconnected from the underlaying organism. Of which our individual selves function as cells.
When it's millions and billions of people, it's not so much culture and politics, as it's biology and physics.
