Having been following the news and reading history since the 70's, I could write a long answer, but time is short, so some bullet points;
Do you know what the original purpose of Nato was?
Given the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia allowed a bunch of western advisers to come in and set up an brand new economic system for them, why didn't Nato go the way of the Warsaw Pact?
Could it be that the industrial expansion of the United States brought on by World War 2, has seriously defined how we have structured our economy and government, with the military given pretty much carte blanche in having final word, for "national security?"
So are we going to dismantle that system and work towards the greater good of humanity? Hahaha.
If the powers that be were truly concerned about the environment, wouldn't the end of the Cold War been an extremely opportune time to develop global diplomacy and not just keep blowing up little countries and having staring down contests with larger ones?
The reason China rose the way it did, is because our powers that be realized they could make far more money outsourcing much of domestic industry to them and holding onto the profits. Now the Chinese are starting to say they want to be middle class too and have some say in world affairs, so now they are our enemies.
As for Russia, simply put, it has enormous resources, which our financial markets are starting to realize, that ultimately all their leveraged debt is presumably based on something of value, like commodities and cutting off the Russians suddenly means cutting off a necessary part of that underlaying value and all that leverage is starting the domino effect..
I could go on, but it looks like history and the markets are shortly making the point for me. We have outsmarted ourselves.
