Here is a good crackpot way to model it;
We are these mobile organisms, which necessitates this sequential process of perception, in order to navigate. Consequently we view time as the point of the present, moving past to future. Physics codifies it as measures of duration.
The reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns. Duration is the present, as the events rise and fall.
There is no literal "dimension" of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Energy is "conserved," because it is present. It creates time, as well as temperature, pressure, color, sound. Frequencies and amplitudes. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
Different clocks can run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
That civilization is about getting everyone playing the same game, by the same rules, using the same measurements, it might seem there should be some universal Newtonian flow of time, but there is rabbit time, turtle time, tree time, etc.
Time is asymmetric because it is a measure of action and action is inertial. The earth only turns one direction.
Ideal gas laws correlate volume with temperature and pressure, but we don't call them dimensions of space, because they are only foundational to our emotions and bodily functions, not the sequence of thought.
So energy, as process and present, goes past to future, while the patterns it generates go future to past. In terms of the wave, the energy drives it, as the fluctuations rise and fall.
So think about that; Energy goes the opposite direction of time, as the information.
Now as these sentient creatures, we have the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy driving us on, while the central nervous system sorts and orders the information being generated. Such as when we think of waves, we think of squiggly lines, unless it is actually crashing down on your head.
Consciousness goes past to future, while thoughts go future to past. Suggesting consciousness functions as energy, always probing, even its own forms and perceptions.
The mind likes clarity, but energy can be quite fuzzy, considering much of it travels at the speed of light. So our minds process a sequence of perceptions extracted from this sea of energy and forms, like a movie camera takes a series of stills.
Yet this experience is little more than illusury, given what is extracted from the senses, is filtered through a very active imagination. We think sequence is causal, but yesterday doesn't cause today, the sun shining on a spinning planet creates this cycle of days and nights.
Now science does exist out on the cutting edge of knowledge and as distilled thought processes, it has a necessary bias toward clarity, thus the very small, very large and very abstract, as that is where the illusion of clarity is strongest.
The fact is that the math is emergent with the patterns it describes, not platonic ideals. It is a tool, not god whispering in the ears of the initiates. Epicycles were brilliant math, as a description of our view of the cosmos, while the crystalline spheres were lousy physics, as explanation. Map versus territory.
The disadvange of being on the cutting edge is that you have to self regulate. No one from the government is going to tell you you can't just write in a figure and call it dark money, when the books don't add up.
