Here is an idea to think over;
We are mobile organisms, so this sentient interface between body and world functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate. So our experience of time is as the point of the present, moving past to future.
The reality is change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns.
There is no "dimension" of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Energy is "conserved," becsause it manifests this presence, creating time, temperature, pressure, color and sound. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
So the energy goes past to future, because the patterns it generates coalesce and dissolve, future to past.
Energy drives the wave, the fluctuations rise and fall.
Galaxies are energy radiating out, toward infinity, as the form coalesces in, toward equilibrium, radiating the energy back out.
The form synchronizes as a path of least resistance. One big wave is more efficient than more small ones.
While the energy, radiating out across all forms, harmonizes them. Nodes and networks, organisms and ecosystems, particles and fields. Synchronization versus harmonization.
So the entropy, of energy and then the forms it manifests, go opposite directions.
Consciousness also goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts giving it form and structure go future to past. Though it is the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy and feeding the flame, while the central nervous system sorts the information precipitating out. Motor and steering.
So the cognitive tendency is to concentrate on the information, rather than the energy. Order and chaos, known and unknown, rather than energy and form.
Evolving as tree dwelling quadrupeds, we have bifocal vision to judge distance and tactile abilities to grasp. So we tend to be linear and object oriented.
Yet in all our efforts to find that smallest bit, be it atoms, quanta, or strings, it seems the reality is more dualist, than monist. Positive and negative charge, than stuff. Yin and yang, than God Almighty.
As Emerson put it, we are but thickened light.
Here is someone arguing it's waves all the way down;
