I may have mentioned this to you about a year ago, but I do think our physiology is a significant factor in our confusion about time.
As these mobile organisms, this sentient interface between our body and its situation functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so our experience of time is as the point of the present, moving past to future, codified as measures of duration, while the evident reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns. Duration is the present, as the events come and go.
There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Energy is "conserved," because it manifests this presence, creating the effect of time, as well as temperature, pressure, color and sound. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
Ideal gas laws correlate volume with temperature and pressure, but we don't mistake them for extensions of space and they are as foundational to our emotions and bodily functions, as sequence is to thought.
Different clocks can run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
That we function in these social groups, that require a fair degree of synchronization, using the same languages, rules and measures, it might seem like there should be some universal flow of time, but the very reason nature is both diverse and integrated, is because everything doesn't march to the beat of the same drummer. Multicutural, not monoculture.
That different events will appear in different order from different points of view is no more consequential than seeing the moon as it was a moment ago, simultaneous with seeing stars as they were years ago. It's the energy that's conserved, not the information. That the information changes is time!
Time is asymmetric, because it is a measure of action and action is inertial. The earth only turns one direction. Entropy is a second order effect and not what is actually being measured. Which is always some specific, regular action.
Given the energy manifests this presence, time is a consequence of its constantly changing form. So the energy goes past to future, because the patterns generated go future to past. Energy drives the wave, while the fluctuations rise and fall.
So the energy is not synonymous with the information it is generating.
Consciousness also goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts giving it form and structure go future to past. Though it's the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy, feeding the flame, while the central nervous system sorts the information. Which would seem to explain the intellectual fascination with form over process. The math over the physics.
Yet math is an abstraction of the physical, not the basis for it. Map, not territory. Signal from the noise. If the map tried to incorporate every feature of the territory, it would revert back to noise.
It does seem the fields of physics have wandered far afield of the empirical, in trying to make their various models conform to the evidence and each other, but it doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon.
