I see a more elemental dichotomy in energy and form. Think galaxies; energy radiates out, as form coalesces in. It is the essence of energy that it pushes against whatever impedes it. While it is the essence of form to define and refine.

As mobile organisms, we have the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems to process the energy driving us on, along with a central nervous system to sort though the information precipitating out, as well as referee the impulses and emotions bubbling up.

It is not so much the objects of our desire that drive us, but the fact of our desire, be it for pleasure, power or knowledge. The fire within, seeking more.

The appetite gives the meal meaning.

What drives life and society is that tension and balance between desire and judgement. The heart and the head. Youth and age, liberal and conservative.
