I seem to have lived that life once removed. Having grown up in the world of horse racing, I realized pretty early on, that it is a nonsensical premise for large numbers of people to obsessively base their lives around, but then I also realized the rest of civilization lived equally bizarre notions, just obscured them more effectively, to the point of more violently repressing the reality. So I stuck with living with the horse people, even if it was mostly for the horses and the open space.
I think some of the lessons we have to learn are very basic. One is that society cannot function, without rights and responsibilities existing in some organic relationship. The world has gone through human civilization's greatest growth spurt and now that it's topping out, everyone wants their rights and piles of cash, but no one wants to be responsible.
Another basic physical factor that even the physicists seemed to have overlooked, is that synchronization is inherently centripetal, while harmonization is inherently centrifugal. Just as a hint of the physical implications, consider that gravity is a centripetal dynamic, so one of the larger issues in theoretical physics might be to consider that mass is an effect of gravity, rather than gravity a property of mass. Then all the excess gravitional effect is the synchronization/centripetal effects outside the denser end of the spectrum.
Synchronization being where two forces become one larger force, so more energy/less information, thus ordered, while harmonization means distributing the energy broadly, thus generating more information expressed by less energy, thus complexity.
Then if we consider it in terms of biology, culture and politics, the effect is organisms and ecosystems, nodes and networks. So social dynamics that become too focused on one central premise, from monotheism to the capitalist bottom line, get caught up in feedback loops that override all possible circuit breakers and spiral into a vortex, like a drug addict unable to overcome their addictions.
I could go on with this, but I just put up an essay, trying to frame it in the current situation;
