I suspect it goes much, much deeper.

The last 10,000 years of 'Go forth and multiply' are running up against the edge of the global petri dish in exponential fashion. It is time to come to terms with the fact our instinctive worldview is based on a flat earth. We are linear, goal seeking organisms in a cyclical, circular, reciprocal, feedback generated reality. We haven't internalized the implications of the world being round, not flat.
