I suspect the breaking point will be political, rather than economic. Specifically the 22 elections, when the two sides realize it is a fight to the death, over whether or not the House and Senate switch to the Republicans and we get the pendulum starting to swing back in the other direction.

Then the elites start eating each other and the states start going in different directions.
