I think an underlaying aspect is that our moral system assumes good and bad to be some cosmic dual between the forces of righteousness and evil, but they are the biological binary of beneficial and detrimental. Basis, not apex.
So all the more complex social, emotional, cultural inclinations; respect, honor, responsibility, trust, etc, as well as the negatives, are emergent from this binary foundation. Yet because we don’t recognize these as organic necessities, when conflicts arise, it quickly becomes a race to the bottom, of us versus them, good versus bad, rather than each side being able to assume the other will hold to and respect the complex social structures, possibly using such situations to further evolve.
