I think it goes much deeper than social control. That structure, both physical and logical, is inherently centripetal.

Think in terms of a galaxy, where the energy radiates out, as the structure coalesces in.

As these mobile organisms, we have the digestive system processing the energy driving us on, while the nervous system sorts through the signals precipitating out. Consequently there is this mental gravitational attraction toward some central locus. Think religious icons.

Yet as complex organisms, we are complex feedback loops between the energy radiating and the form coalescing. Eventually those collapsing toward that center will go super nova. Big Reality check.
