I think our inability to distinguish is from ought goes to the heart of the problem. We want to patch the problems as they arise, not go back and figure out why they occur in the first place, as that would be too complicated for a large, fractious society, so we tend to hunker down in our particular idea of how it should be and fight with those most directly opposed to our position.

Black and white is easier than nuance. Which is why religion tends to frame good and bad as that cosmic conflict between the forces of righteousness and evil, rather than the more mundane and elemental biological binary of beneficial and detrimental.
