I think the big perceptual issue with time, is that being mobile organisms, aka, fauna, our sentience is focused as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate. So our experience of time is as this point of the present, moving past to future. Which physics codifies as measures of duration.
The reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns. Duration is the present, as the events rise and fall, like so many waves.
There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
It's a bit like seeing the sun moving east to west, before understanding it's the earth turning the other way.
Energy is "conserved," because it is this physical presence. It creates time, as well as temperature, pressure, color and sound. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
Ideal gas laws correlate volume with temperature and pressure, but we don't refer to them as dimensions of space, even though they are as fundamental to our emotions, bodily functions and environment, as sequence is to thought.
Time is asymmetric, because it is a measure of action and action is inertial. The earth only turns one direction. Entropy is a second order effect and not what is measured as time.
Different clocks can run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
Energy, as process and present, goes past to future, while the patterns generated go future to past. Energy drives the wave, the fluctuations rise and fall.
In a factory, the products go start to finish, future to past, while the production line goes the other way, consuming material and expelling product, toward the furure, away from the past.
As lives go birth to death, while life moves onto the next generation, shedding the old.
Consciousness goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts giving it form and structure go future to past. Though it's the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy, feeding the flame, while the central nervous system sorts the information. Signals from the noise.
So we tend to distinguish in terms of order and chaos, rarher than energy and form. Even though excess signal reverts to noise, from our subjective point of view.
The future is not determined, because the process of determination only occurs as the present and it is the process, the energy of the present, which manifests the patterns being determined, so they don't exist otherwise.
These patterns, waves, tend to either synchronize, which is centripetal, or harmonize, which is centrifugal. So, nodes coalescing in and networks distributing out. Organisms and ecosystems. Particles and fields.
Much of civilization amounts to a process of synchronization, as everyone falls into line, hearing the same cultural narratives, speaking the same languages, using the same measures. Thus the sense there is some universal, Newtonian flow of time, but what allows nature to be so diverse and dense, is that everything doesn't get in line. It's multicultural, not monocultural.
There is rabbit time, turtle time, tree time, light time, earth time. When everyone is following the same rules, for the same goals, it naturally becomes a race and everyone is on rabbit time, but the turtle is still plodding along, long after the rabbit has died.
Galaxies are energy radiating out, toward infinity, while form coalesces in, toward equilibrium.
At the center of galaxies are black holes and most of what falls in is shot out the poles, as quasars. Which are like giant lasers and lasers are synchronized light waves.
Order is synchronization, being a lot of energy defined by little information, while chaos is lots of information being expressed. Yet on scale, it tends to be equalized, thus harmonized.
Entropy is both energy radiating out, toward infinity and forms settling back toward equilibrium. Yet any energy lost in one area is replaced by energy radiating in from others. While forms equalize by that centripetal effect of synchronization. So while information is reduced, energy is focused.
We fluctuate somewhere in the middle, between fading out and cancelling out.
