That is because culture synchronizes society as a larger social super organism. Much as in culture wars, you have to be on one side or the other, not trying to look at both arguments. Like anyone not jumping up and down and shrieking Russia is Evil, or All Gaza's Are Terrorists, must be a Putin apologist, or side with the Terrorists.

So one is herding people, polarization, the other is a computational process.

Those who look at both sides might not actually synthesize some coherent mix, but they do understand the crazies have to burn down as much as they can, before something else can grow out of the ashes.
