It does seem the last generation of theorists are all about churning up a lot of equation salad, to cover the fact they are lost.
The big point I keep coming back to is time. As these mobile organisms, this sentient interface our bodies have with their situations functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so our experience of time is as the point of the present moving past to future, when the evident reality is activity and the resulting change is turning future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns.
So all the efforts to model time as the narrative flow turn out about like epicycles, modeling the cosmos turning east to west, rather than the earth turning west to east.
So time is more like temperature, pressure, color and sound, than space. Frequencies and amplitudes, rates and degrees.
