My sense is the West really doesn't have a fallback plan for how society functions, once the fear of God was lost. So lots of stuff is tried. Mostly, "will to power." Grabbing anything you can.

So much of history is out of bounds, because it isn't written by the Good Guys.

The irony is that our brains evolved out of dealing with problems, not basking in the sun, so valuable lessons are lost and we keep doing the same dumb shit again.
