Keep in mind the oldest, largest field of math is accounting and in accounting, they understand that math is a tool, not god whispering in one's ear, so when the incentives are strong, there is the possibility the complexity can be used to obscure, rather than enlighten.
For example, if an accountant comes across a gap in the figures, they are supposed to go back and tear apart all of the previous figures, until the cause of this miscalculation is found. It is considered bad form to just write in a figure and call it "dark money," as some of the more cutting edge fields, that lack the possibility of significant oversight, find acceptable.
