Logically a spiritual absolute would be the essence of sentience, from which we rise, not an ideal of wisdom and judgement, from which we fell. More the light shining through the film, than the images and storyline on it.
The problem is not so much religion, since it is more cultural and historical and no society could function by simply reveling in sentience, as it is philosophy. Conflating the ideal with the absolute should be considered a mortal sin, in terms of coherent thought. It validates our most reductionist instincts. When the theological assumption faded, the impulse was transferred to materialism and now our God is the bottom line.
The reality is more a dichotomy, a tension and balance between opposites. Even the material is more positive and negative change, than it is any singular substance. Yin and yang, rather than God Almighty, of one side or the other.
We are the anarchy of desire versus the tyranny of judgement.
