Lol. I grew up as fifth of six around more horses and cattle than people. While the food was enough, you didn't leave the table until you were finished, the fights were over everything else. Eventually who got to train the most horses.
I wasn't really born to fight, only watch, so I've spent my life keeping things running, fixing what breaks, from foaling and breaking yearlings to now fixing old farm machinery for a family friend in the business of old farm machinery.
This view from up here in the cheap seats has been very clarifying.
For one thing, as these mobile organisms, this sentient interface our body has with its situation functions as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so our sense of time is as the present moving past to future, but the evident reality is that activity and the resulting change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns.
There is no dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
It's like a tapestry being woven of strands being pulled from what was woven.
Different clocks can run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
That society is about learning from the prior generation, as they learned from theirs, going back to the dawn of history and that society and culture are about synchronizing the group as a larger social super organism, getting everyone on the same wavelength, using the same languages, codes, creeds, rules, measures, it might seem there is some universal flow, from past to future, like a geocentric cosmology seemed logical, before Copernicus and Galileo.
Yet we are very much organisms based on motion.
Around the time this was first occurring to me, late 80's, I also developed epilepsy and the medication affects me like a pot hangover, seriously slowing my need for speed, so to mentally compensate, I've developed my sense of focus and understanding of focus. There are too many doors in the mind best left closed, or opened gently.
So this focus is not only about concentration, but keeping everything in context. Those feedback loops of synchronization need circuit breakers to keep one's own bubble in the larger harmony, surfing the resonance between synchronization and harmonization. Otherwise everything spirals into that black hole in the middle.
Much of my writing here on Medium has been exploring the various implications, as applied to civilization's current conundrums.
