Maybe there is an underlaying organic dynamic at work.

Think of society as a cycle of raw social energies pushing out, as civil and cultural forms coalesce in. The anarchy of desire versus the tyranny of judgement. The heart and the head.

The problem is more this cultural paradigm of monist idealism, where it all has to be framed as one source and force. The long shadow of God, rather than the yin and yang of cycles.

Then each side sees themselves as on the one true path and the other as misbegotten fools, not as both sides being part of the larger dynamic.
