Maybe we need to step back and consider how and why it works that way.

For one thing, the signals we pick up from the noise are what resonates and synchronizes with our prior knowledge. Which applies to both individuals and cultures. For example, religions are like the childhood memories and lessons of the culture, arising from our most emotional, but least informed states.

So it becomes like a tree, with each ring building on and adding to the previous, as well as patching any injuries it might have.

Yet the actual tree might be hollowed out and rotten on the inside. Pedophilia among Catholic priests comes to mind.

The reality checks come when the big storm tests those trees. Given the mother of all reality checks would seem to be in the mail, we might be finding that is rot and what is not.
