Michael Hudson wrote a book a few years ago, called Forgive Them Their Debts. Naked Capitalism did a review and interview on it;

It is the exact same dynamic, as occurred with Russia, the oligarchs and Putin. That the political need to hold a state together is in conflict with the wealthy leveraging more wealth in an ever building feedback loop. Centripetal versus centrifugal forces.

China is actually doing something similar, under Xi.

So yes, in our current context, the next step would seem to be a strong man, or, such as with Afghanistan and the Taliban, a closely bound culturally based organization. Though the US really doesn't have a strong cultural foundation to fall back on, other than growth, given it only has a few centuries during history's greatest growth spurt.

The other tact would be to really examine, develop and clarify the basic dynamic at work, then find ways to educate people to the process, so that it doesn't keep getting out of hand.

I've developed some of these ideas in a few other posts, so I won't repeat them here, but this is a more recent essay, where I tried covering some of the bases;
