One should look at the larger question of why the times seem to favor attention seeking narcissists. Referencing our own dear, not quite departed Donald.

My own theory is that as the executive and regulatory function, government is analogous to a central nervous system, while money and banking are analogous to blood and the circulation system.

Given Western civilization has come to realize, not that long ago, that government works best as a public utility, but has yet to realize the same will eventually have to apply to the banking system, it has left the banks in charge, as government is under the people's purview, while the banks have the people by the balls.

So government has been increasingly reduced to a puppet show, where we are supposed to ignore the hands pulling the strings. Leaving the biggest, shallowest characters to fill the void.

The downfall of this situation is that without the judgement implicit in a functioning governing structure, our current overlords have all the strategic aptitude of bacteria racing across a petri dish, as they drain all value into their own pockets, rather than circulate it to the benefit of the larger society.

Even parasites need a healthy host and when the civil structures crash and burn, it won't be the oligarchs in charge, but the warlords, as their more venal puppets cut the strings and go freelance.
