Science has a similar problem with energy, as with consciousness, in that it can only be defined by the forms being manifest.

Culture and civilization are based on that temporal flow, through narrative and history. Academia, as the study of humanity's cumulative knowledge, is a function of that process.

That we are linear, goal oriented creatures in this cyclical, circular, reciprocal, feedback generated reality, it's like we haven't really internalized the implications of the world being round, not flat.
