Part of the problem is that as these mobile organisms, our sentience coalesces as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate, so we experience the point of the present moving past to future, though the reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, becuse the earth turns.
So it's bit like trying to figure out how the sun travels east to west, before understanding the earth turns west to east.
There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Different clocks run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
Energy is "conserved," because it is the present. It creates time, as well as temperature, pressure, color and sound. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
So energy, as process and present, goes past to future, while the patterns generated go future to past.
Energy drives the wave, while the fluctuations rise and fall.
Consciousness also goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts giving it form and structure go future to past. As lives go birth to death, while life moves onto the next generation, shedding the old.
Though it's the gut and heart processing the energy, feeding the flame, while the nervous system sorts the information. Signals from the noise. So we tend to think in terms of order and chaos, rather than energy and form.
Waves, as the most basic form, tend to either synchronize, which is centripetal, or harmonize, which is centrifugal. So there are nodes and networks, organisms and ecosystems, particles and fields.
Culture and civilization tend to be about getting everyone synchronized, following the same stories, playing by the same rules, using the same measures. Which is a pretty neat trick, until the positive feedback turns negative, which is at the top of the arc, where we are most intoxicated, so we lose sight of the larger reality and spiral into some rabbit hole.
One of those many lessons to be learned. Circuit breakers are necessary, if we don't want to burn the house down.
Hopefully we are closer to the end of the beginning, than the beginning of the end.
