Part of the problem is that we have this cultural assumption that good and bad are some cosmic conflict between the forces of righteousness and evil, but they are the basic biological binary of beneficial and detrimental. The 1/0 of life, from which our higher order emotional and cultural inclinations, impulses and contructs emerge. Like respect, responsibility, trust, honor, love. along with the complex negatives as well, such as envy, revenge, jealousy, etc.

Since we view this basic binary as an ideal, when conflicts arise, we quickly lose sight of our evolved emotions and it becomes a race to the bottom, of us, versus them, good versus bad, rather than holding to and assuming the other side will equally value the social construct.

So attempts at mediation or examining nuance are looked at with distrust, rather than seeing the situation as further opportunity to grow and evolve.

Given a spiritual absolute would be the essence of sentience, from which life rises, rather than an ideal of wisdom and judgement, from which it fell, this is part of the long shadow of a slowly fading God.
