Part of the problem is this cultural/religious treatment of good and bad as some cosmic conflict between good and evil, rather than the basic biological binary of beneficial and detrimental. What's good for the fox, is bad for the chicken.

All our higher order social contructs, love, honor, trust, respect, responsibility, etc. are complex social dynamics emerging from this basis, like a computer program is based on a binary. So when good is assumed to be an ideal, than elemental, conflicts become a race to the bottom, as all nuance and subjectivity is lost to the simple minded extremes that dominate these black and white fights. Chest thumping and poo slinging.

The mind is just referee to the emotions.
