Part of the problem might be that our culture assumes good and bad to be some cosmic conflict between righteousness and evil, but they are the basic biological binary of beneficial and detrimental. The 1/0 of life. Even bacteria sense attraction/repulsion.

So it is from this essential binary that all the higher order emotions evolve. Respect, responsibility, trust, love, honor, friendship, empathy etc. Not to mention the negatives; hate, jealousy, envy, etc.

Though as our culture assumes good and bad as the ideal, rather than the essence, conflicts quickly become a race to the bottom, of us, versus them, good versus bad, black versus white.

Rather than each side being able to assume the other will respect the structure of evolved civilization and be able to sort through the myriad complexities and nuances of particular situations.

We are not as evolved as we assume.
