People are linear, goal oriented creatures in a cyclical, circular, feedback generated reality.

Europe is Europe because it has lots of natural boundaries, mountains, seas, channels, forests, peninsulas, etc, that allowed different groups to remain relatively distinct and so solidified the idea of the nationstate as a stable political entity. That is being washed away.
