Processes do generate patterns. Think of a wave, where the process is the energy carrying it along, while the patterns generated are the undulations and fluctuations, rising and falling. So they are really going opposite directions of time, as the energy proceeds onto the future, while the patterns recede into the past.

Which is what we do experience as time. The events come and go, future to past, while the energy, as this physical state referred to as the present, moves onto future events.
