Step back a few feet and ask yourself, what are Nato and the EU?

They are a European confederation. Think back a mere century and ask how is that possible? These people have all been at each others throats for millennia. It's existential. Neitzschian Will to Power.

They need that outside boogeyman to function.

Now look at the Russian side. Yes, they are also used to slitting each others throats, whenever possible, but they are not totally surrounded by implacable enemies, because the edge of the earth, or at least the cold hard north is as much a limiting factor as a bunch of asshole neighbors. So the idea that hey, maybe we can all just be friends and get along, as opposed to the European position of, we better get along, or the Americans and Russians will smash us, is not as totally ridiculous as it's argued.

Time will tell, but I suspect this winter will be hard on that European grand unity and those old animosities will rise to the surface.
