Stopping through for lunch, so still haven't read it, but I'd say the left side of the brain is the clock/ruler, while the right side of the brain is the thermostat/barometer.

E.O. Wilson described the insect brain as a thermostat, but it's been shown that ants can count, as a function of navigation;

The left side sees and judges the peaks of the waves, frequency and amplitude, information and definition, while the right side senses the pressures and temperatures rising and falling.
