The fallacy of monotheism is that a spiritual absolute would be the essence of sentience, from which we rise, not an ideal of wisdom and judgement, from which we fell.

Though no society could function by simply reveling in sentience, so we worship the ideal, as seen through the lens of particular cultures.

So the problem is not so much of religion, which is cultural institutionalization, necessarily involving lots of politics and age old superstitions, wrapped around stories for children, to indoctrinate them, but of philosophy, for not seeing the serious dangers in assuming ideals as absolutes.

Even as monotheistic religion faded in power, the underlaying process remains, such as by turning the economic tool of money into the civilizational God of the bottom line. The ideal of wealth has become the absolute power.
