The irony here is one of the main sources of our ecological destruction is the ability to abstract value out of literally everything, on the assumption that storing it will provide for our future, while destroying the social networks and environment on which that future actually depends. Ie, treating money as a commodity to mine from society, rather than the social contract enabling large societies. Creating this atomized culture, where we are just workers and consumers, generating cash flow for the powers that be to siphon out.
Consider that what really separates us from other forms of life, is our imagination. The ability to mentally project out possible and alternative futures, as a way to plan our actions. While much of life is more concerned with being situationally aware and stay in zones in which their immediate food sources and living conditions exist.
While our leaders routinely manipulate us through promises of a brighter future, from religious zealotry, where this future is in the afterlife, to struggle in our lives that will give our children a better future.
So it isn't so much our lack of concern for the future, as it is that our planning for it tends to break down, for many reasons.
We are linear, goal oriented creatures in a cyclical, reciprocal, feedback driven reality.
