The problem is that we are linear, goal oriented creatures in a cyclical, reciprocal, feedback generated reality. Selling your soul for the trinkets is dumb in the first place.

Without the ups and downs, it's a flatline anyway, so always only wanting to go up, either means you are just pushing those ahead of you further up, or finding yourself at the top of a high cliff and no where to go, but down. Look at what messes rich kids often become.
