The process goes to the essence of structure. Like rings of a tree, it is cycles of expansion and consolidation.
I think when we finally come to understand gravity, it will be as a property of synchronization, being centripetal. With the properties assigned as mass as effects, not source.
The signals our minds pick out of the noise are what resonates and synchronizes with our prior knowledge, going back to our earliest memories. Like a pearl forming around that grain of sand.
Religions are like the childhood memories and lessons of cultures. That locus of structure, that center of gravity, that gives focus to the social entity.
Yet when we try to find its essence, we seem to come up empty. Like the eye of a storm, more the energy being expressed, than a thing in itself.
The music is more real than the material.
Often though, those big old trees rot out in the center, even when the growth rings are still living.
Currently many of the real big trees in civilization are apparently hollow and rotten, but no one seems to see any alternatives.
Though those trees will fall and saplings will start growing in the space.
Keep in mind, the life force is character. Culture is just the forms left in its wake.
