The right has always been centered around religious absolutism. Black or white, no grey allowed.
Increasingly though, the left has bought into their own forms of fundamentalism, rather then trying to broaden the conversation, which is the essential strength of liberalism. The entire spectrum between the polarities. That should be their real long term plan, not just duking it out with the conservatives over who can be the most pig headed. True multiculturalism, not just a package of minority grievances being weaponized against the core culture.
I strongly suspect that not only will it not be a winning tactic, but will play into the hands of the most fundamentalist conservatives, by re-enforcing the idea that their absolutist strategies are the only way to win.
