The signals we extract from the noise are what synchronizes with our prior beliefs, maps, models.

Which sets up a self re-enforcing feedback loop. Thus that tendency to get sucked down the various rabbit holes.

The problem is this doesn't just affect fringe individuals, but society as a whole. In fact, the larger the belief system, the more people are attracted to it for the community, than any actual logic.

Peel away the layers of any cultural nexus and you will likely find it some eye of a storm, more than anything in and of itself.

That's why it is useful to remain on the fringes. Not too far in and not too far out.

When you are running with the herd, you can't just stop and scratch your ear, but those little critters in the woods have to listen for every sound. Situational awareness has its benefits.

Especially when the herd seems to be a bunch of lemmings running for a cliff.
