For example, the Ancients didn’t much distinguish between religion and politics, essentially civics and culture, so monotheistic cultures equated with monarchal civics. One God/one ruler. While poly/pantheistic cultures equated with more diverse political models, aka, democracy and republicanism. As in many gods/many voices/power centers.

It was only when the west went back to these more bottom up political forms, that separation of church and state became necessary.
