This is very interesting, in terms of how the brain functions, personally and socially.
It ties into a point I've been trying to make for years, that while it garners a fair amount of agreement, doesn't get much feedback.
We are mobile organisms, which is the logical basis for why our experience of reality is as a sequence of perceptions, in order to navigate.
So our concept of time is as the point of the present, moving past to future. Which physics codifies as measures of duration and correlates with measures of distance.
The physics reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns. Potential, actual, residual. Duration is the present, as the events rise and fall.
There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.
Though it is not necessarily sequence. Yesterday doesn't cause today, the sun shining on a spinning planet creates this cycle of days and nights. Our perception is just small samplings of the light.
Time is asymmetric , because it is a measure of action and action is inertial. The earth only turns one direction. Entropy is a second order effect and not what is measured as time.
Different clocks can run at different rates simply because they are separate actions. Think metabolism.
That civilization is about getting everyone communicating, using the same languages, playing by the same rules, using the same measurements, it might seem like there should be some universal Newtonian flow of time, but there is rabbit time, turtle time, tree time, etc.
When everyone is playing the same game, for the same goals, it becomes a race and everyone is on rabbit time. That's why organisms and monocultures are about synchronization, while ecosystems and multicultures are about harmonization.
So time is an effect, like temperature, pressure, color, sound. Frequencies and amplitudes, whether single or cummulative. Time is frequency, events are amplitude.
Ideal gas laws correlate volume with temperature and pressure, but we don't refer to them as dimensions of space, because they are only foundational to our emotions and bodily functions, not the sequence of thought.
Energy is conserved, because it is the present, not a dimensionless point between past and future. It creates time, so there is no past for it to be lost in, nor future from which it arrives.
As process, the energy goes past to future, while the patterns generated go future to past. In terms of a wave, the energy drives it, as it passes through the medium, of other energies, going other directions, while the fluctuations rise and fall.
In a factory, the product goes start to finish, future to past, while the production line goes the other way, consuming material and expelling product. As lives go birth to death, while life moves onto the next generation, shedding the old.
As consciousness goes past to future, while the perceptions, emotions and thoughts it manifests go future to past.
Though it is the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems processing the energy, feeding the flame, while the central nervous system sorts and orders the information. Signals from the noise. Consequently we tend to think in terms of order and chaos, rather than energy and form.
Logically a spiritual absolute would be the essence of sentience, from which we rise, not an ideal of wisdom and judgement from which we fell. There can be no omniscient omniscience, as an objective perspective is an oxymoron, so excess signal reverts to noise. That's why we rely on maps, not just try to see the territory whole. Thought is reductionism. Coalescing information into knowledge, then to wisdom.
So there is this feedback loop, between energy radiating out, as form coalesces in. Like galaxies. Energy radiating toward infinity, while forms coalesce toward equilibrium. Between everything fading out and everything cancelling out. Both entropic.
Our thought process is just ever more expanding and coalescing feedback loops, between the desires driving us and the judgements that direct our efforts.
Even politics and society, between the organic social energies driving them and the civil and cultural forms they coalesce into, in cycles of order and transcedence.
Getting a bit long here, but I kept going back and filling in details.
