Three dimensions are a mapping device. The xyz coordinate system. Saying space is fundamentally three dimensional is like saying longitude, latitude and altitude are foundational to the biosphere of this planet.

To continue without repeating the argument I offered on the prior Bohm article, if we take all physical properties away from space, the non-physical qualities remaining are infinity and equilibrium.

Infinity as there is nothing to bound it and equilibrium is implicit in General Relativity, as the frame with the fastest clock and longest ruler is closest to the equilibrium of the vacuum.

What fills space is energy and the information/forms it manifests. Energy radiates to infinity, while form coalesces to equilibrium. Both effectively entropic and diametrically opposed. The effect being these cosmic convection cycles, referred to as galaxies.

The problem with physical theory is it tries to formulate everything in terms of the information and wonders why it refuses to add up.

Think of a wave: The energy drives it, while the information, the frequencies and amplitudes, are derived from the forms, the wavy fluctuations and undulations.

Which goes to the issue of time. As mobile organisms with a sequential process of perception and a narrative based culture, we think of it as the present moving past to future, but the reality is that change turns future to past. Tomorrow becomes yesterday, because the earth turns.

There is no literal dimension of time, because the past is consumed by the present, to inform and drive it. Causality and conservation of energy. Cause becomes effect.

So the present is the state of the energy, not some dimensionless point between past and future. It is "conserved," because it creates time. There is no physical past or future. Saying the present is not simultaneous because different events can be observed in different order from different locations is no more consequential than seeing the moon as it was a moment ago, simultaneous with seeing stars as they were years ago. The present is the energy. It's the information that changes. We are seeing the energy and perceiving the information it carries.

So the energy, as process, goes past to future, while the events, the information, the undulations of the waves, rise and fall, come and go, coalesce and dissolve, going future to past, potential to actual to residual.

So when the entire reality is framed by the information, it only sees one side of the issue. The effect, not the cause.

Yes, the information is definition and science likes what is distinct and measureable, but it's only the description, not the explanation. Epicycles were a brilliant description of our view of the cosmos, but the crystalline spheres were lousy explanation. The map is derived from the territory, not the other way around.
