Though Michael Hudson's recent book, Forgive Them Their Debts, poses an interesting dynamic on this, with debt jubilees originating as a political mechanism by the kings/rulers, to hold their societies together, as the oligarchs were tearing them apart. Thus the title of the book, as Jesus' real message was a response to debt jubilees having been avoided for some centuries. It was only as Christianity became co-opted by the powerful, that it switched to "forgive them their sins," as a way to guilt trip people into compliance.
